I was doing some reading this afternoon preparing for a talk that I'll be doing at the beginning of March. The title is Le Temps des Ruptures. The author surveys the origins of the changes that occurred during the 20th century. The first chapter deals with changes in our perception of time and space.
What made me think about my blog was a phrase where he says that utopias are forerunners of radical innovations.
I realized that my old approach to the blogosphere was in many ways utopian. I had found a community that was linked beyond the normal customs and in it I idealized a number of things. I could talk freely of family and friend and ministry.
On the one hand the community that grows around a topic be it knitting or the emerging church is a radical innovation that we have never seen before. Time and space don't matter. I write and the world can read.
I didn't see the dangers. Too much free information means that dangerous people can exploit you. And when the exploitation comes from random searches that lead to pictures of my children landing next to photos that exploit children and adults. It makes you think twice.
So in starting over I'm going to be a little less random and a lot more vigilant to protect the privacy of family and friends.
Here are my new guidelines...
- I will not use the names of my wife, children or any friend who has not chosen to have a public web presence.
- I will post no pictures with a title or file name including a name.
- I will use discretion in talking about my wife's ministry.
That should be a good start.
The world is a messy place.
